How Many Edge Does a Cube Have


Today we are going to learn how many faces, edges, and vertices are in 3D shapes. There are six 3D shapes. The first one is the ‘Cube’. The second one is the ‘Cone’. The third one is ‘Pyramid’. The fourth one is the ‘Cylinder’. The Fifth one is the ‘Cuboid’. The last one is the ‘Sphere’. 


These 3D shapes are not similar to any of them. These are different from all of them. All of them has a different ability and specialty from others. So, they are not the same at all. Every child and kid should gain knowledge on 3D shapes. 3D shapes knowledge is very important for them. They learn so many things about shapes in their schools. But schools don’t teach them anything about 3D shapes. Today kids are the future of the new generation and this generation is computerizing widely. So, we should teach them each and everything about 3D shapes. This lesson is specially made for kids with the easiest English meaning. 


Some things that we should know before we read more about 3D shapes


Flat Surfaces: A plane horizontal surface is called a flat surface. A flat surface has no depths. Also, we can say that a surface that is not carved is a flat surface. A flat surface will never roll. It will always stand till.


Curved Face: A surface that is rounded is called a curved surface or curved face. A curved surface is not flat. An object can have a curved surface all around it. Such objects have only one surface throughout. For example, we can say that an egg and a ball have got the curved faces. 


Edges: Some of the 3D shapes also have edges. Most of the kids don’t know the meaning of edges. An edge is a place where two flat faces meet. Edges are straight and they can not be curved. 


Vertices: If we talk about vertices, a vertex is a place where there are two or more edges meet. Vertex is a point. At this point, two or more line segments meet. In some cases, Vertex can be seen as a corner. Vertex is singular and vertices are plural.


Now, let’s see some details of the 3D shapes:  




The cube has no curved face. That’s why a cube can not roll. But a cube has many flat faces. If we count a cube’s flat faces then we will find six flat faces. If we see how many edges does a cube has then we can see there are 12 edges in a cube. Now, let’s see how many vertices are in a cube. If we count then we will see there are 8 vertices in a cube. 




If we come to the ‘Cone’, its detail is very sort. A cone has only one curved face. If we see its flat surface then we will see there is just one flare surface in its bottom. The strange thing is that a cone has no edges. That’s why it has just one curved face and one flat surface. It also has no vertices. 




Now, let’s see the details of the pyramid. The pyramid has 5 faces. Let’s see how many edges does a pyramid has. There are 8 edges in a pyramid. It’s time for the vertices of the pyramid. There are 5 vertices in a pyramid. A pyramid can not roll. It always stands on a flat surface. Because it has no curved face. 




Now, let’s come to the most interesting shape ‘Cylinder’. A cylinder has 1 curved face. It has 2 flat surfaces. One is on the bottom and the other one is on top. But it has no edges. That’s why it has no vertices also. It can roll. But if it stands on one of its flat surfaces then it will stay stand until someone make it stand on its curved face. So, it can stand all day long and it also can roll. 




A cuboid looks similar to a cube. But still, it has some differences then cube. A cube has the same length of edges. But a cuboid has a different length of edges. A cuboid has 6 faces. It has 12 edges. And if we talk about its vertices it has 8 vertices. So, just like a cube a cuboid also has six faces, twelve edges, and eight vertices. It also can not roll and it always stands still just like the cube. A cuboid’s length of its edges is very bigger. That’s why it is different then cube. If a cube’s edge’s length increases then it will call the cuboid. 




It is time for the ‘Sphere’. Let’s count how many different flat surfaces it has. It has no flat surfaces. Which means it has no edges. That’s why it has no vertices also. It has only one curved face. It can roll. It can never standstill. If we force in a sphere it will start rolling and it’s not going to stop soon. If we give an example then this matter will be cleared. A ball can be a great example of this. We see that if we throw a ball it will not stop along until someone hold it. Cause ball got a sphere shape.

Knowledge of shapes is very important for kids. In this world around us, everything has got a shape. If today’s kids don’t gain knowledge about these shapes then they will never know the logic of these shapes’ work and differences. They can get a general knowledge about these but for the virtual world, we have to inspire them and help them to gain knowledge on 3D shapes
